Hey there!
If you haven’t been to my home office, then I’d love to tell you about it. I work in a very bright, airy treatment room that is separated from the rest of my home by 2 glass French doors that I painstakingly sprayed frosting on to hide the fact that I have a family of little people that still don’t know how to put things away after they’ve played with them. However, I work mainly with families with even little people who don’t have time to shower, do dishes, brush their teeth, so I don’t think anyone would judge me anyway. Life is tough.
I’ve been building this business for 3 and half years now (yes, I added the half… every day is a victory and I’m owning all of my wins). When I started out, I was doing home visits because my treatment room was still under construction, the bathroom was a door off of my kitchen (it was weird) and I didn’t want people walking through my house and seeing my messy house! So I did home visits. And for a time it was really great. I love going into other peoples homes and seeing how they live, messy home and all! Strange how that is… hmm I’ll have to process that one later on.
Anyway, when I was in my early 20’s (21-22) I was a hairdresser and I lived in India for a couple of years. To make money I did the hair of expats and diplomats that had found my contact by word of mouth and I would set up shop in whatever space that was provided for me. I got to see some reeeeally cool homes, I met amazingly well travelled people, and I saw mind-blowing artifacts from all over the world. It was fantastic. I did that for 2 years in New Delhi, and I don’t know if you’ve ever been there, but this was back in the day when there wasn’t google maps on your phone. You know how many times I got lost? They do NOT live on a grid… “Turn left at this tomb. Turn right after the 3rd roundabout. Go past the market, and when you reach the gate, ask the guard to tell you where house number 3322 is. Call me if you need help”….. I need help! All this with a driver that didn’t know English very well. Oh, those were the days.
Okay, my nostalgia is getting me off track. I almost forgot what I was talking about!! Okay, focus. This is all to say that I felt VERY comfortable driving around the city and going into people’s homes to offer them this beautiful service. This meant that they wouldn’t have to pack up their diaper bag, get their baby ready, have the baby poop in the car seat when they are walking out the door, change them and their clothes, get back in their car and drive 45 minutes to my house and then have to drive all the way back home with a screaming baby. And because I’m a Massage Therapist, this service was partially or fully covered by their benefits through work.
But as the months went by and my treatment room renos were completed, I added more appointments at my home office. My schedule was really filling up. I was starting to get a 1 week wait list, and I was driving around 5 days a week, with some home office visits in the middle of the day. It was getting to be too much. So, I stopped doing home visits outside of a certain radius to my house. And since I was driving less between clients, I was able to take on more babies. I was seeing 10-15 babies a week between home visits and my office. Then what happened? You guessed it! Covid. Shut down. Stay home. Don’t let anyone in your home. And so I did that for 3 months. I reevaluated my business and decided I wasn’t going to do home visits anymore.
As soon as I reopened my doors, I was fully booked with at least a 2 week wait list. Families were struggling and they needed help. For a solid year now I’ve been fully booked at my home office, not doing a single home visit and seeing anywhere from 15-20 babies a week. I only take clients Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. I don’t take a lunch, and I get in as many babies that I can. They need the help, and I am willing to give it.
But what is happening now is that I have this wait list, and I’m not able to see people for weeks, and even months after they really need the help. And that’s just too far away in the future. They need the help yesterday.
So I’ve come up with a plan. I am going to hire people to work for MyBaby Craniosacral here in Toronto that want to provide that arm of the business that I am not doing anymore. I want to have the option for families to receive this care in their homes.
